WHAT IS THE Radon Mitigation System Repair Process?

Does your home already have a radon mitigation system? In Maine, 1 out of 3 homes will require or have already had a professional radon mitigation system installed. At Quality Radon, our certified radon contractor will be able to diagnose and make repairs to restore the function of your currently installed unit.

Our technician can diagnose and provide radon system repair, helping extend the life of your current infrastructure and fan while keeping the levels of radon in your home low.

At Quality Radon we are able to provide you with highly accurate, short term radon tests to ensure your mitigation system is working properly to keep your radon gas levels well below the EPA’s recommended saturation of 4 pCi/L.

We also will explain the benefits of sealing cracks and edges, installing sump pump covers, and continuing to test every 2 years as part of our comprehensive mitigation service.

Our priority is the health and safety of you and your loved ones. With the help of one-on-one, free consultation, mitigation services, and short term, third party testing, we will work together to keep your breathing air as safe from this carcinogenic, lung cancer-causing gas as possible.

FAQs About Radon System Repair

Does a finished basement affect how well the radon system works?

A finished basement can make radon mitigation more complex because the concrete slab may be covered with flooring materials that limit access to suction points. If the mitigation system was installed before finishing, this is generally not an issue as long as the existing suction points remain accessible. Renovations that seal or cover existing suction point locations may reduce system effectiveness and require relocation of piping. Always inform a radon contractor about any basement finishing plans before and after installation.

How do I find a certified radon mitigation repair technician?

The best way to find a certified radon contractor to repair your mitigation system is through the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) or the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB) contractor lookup tools available on their websites. Many states also maintain their own lists of licensed radon mitigators and testers. Always verify that any contractor you hire holds current certification and carries liability and workers' compensation insurance. Avoid hiring general contractors who are not radon-certified for mitigation system repairs, as improper repairs can compromise effectiveness and safety.

Why is my radon system making noise?

Some noise from a radon mitigation fan is normal, as it is essentially a small inline exhaust motor running continuously. However, loud rattling, grinding, or squealing noises are warning signs that the motor bearings are failing and replacement may be imminent. Vibration noise can sometimes be reduced by tightening pipe connections or adding pipe hangers, but internal motor noise typically indicates the end of the fan's lifespan. Contact a certified radon professional if your system develops any unusual or worsening noises.

How often should a radon mitigation system be inspected?

The EPA recommends having your radon mitigation system visually inspected at least once a year to ensure all components are functioning properly. A professional inspection includes checking the fan, manometer, pipe connections, and sealing around the suction point. Annual inspections allow technicians to identify wear and tear before a complete system failure occurs. Pairing annual inspections with biennial radon testing provides the most comprehensive level of protection.

My home was built with radon-resistant new construction. Do I still need repairs?

Radon-resistant new construction (RRNC) features reduce but do not eliminate the risk of elevated radon, and even these homes should be tested regularly. RRNC homes typically have a passive system that may need to be activated with a fan if post-construction testing shows elevated levels. Over time, the passive components of the system - such as the vapor barrier and sealing - can degrade and may need professional attention. Annual testing and periodic professional inspections are still recommended even in RRNC homes.

How do I check my radon system's manometer?

The manometer is typically a small U-shaped tube filled with colored liquid, mounted on the radon pipe in your basement or utility area. If the fluid levels are unequal - one side higher than the other - the system is actively generating suction and operating correctly. Equal fluid levels on both sides indicate a loss of suction, meaning the fan may have failed. Check your manometer monthly as part of a simple routine home maintenance habit.
